What Is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery is a subclass within the dental field that treats many different dental health issues, such as jaw defects, disease, and injury. The most common dental surgery that we perform in our Bayside, New York office is tooth extraction. Oral surgery can be used to remove wisdom teeth or to remove other decayed and damaged teeth.
Unlike traditional surgery on another part of the body, oral surgery does not require a long hospital stay. Oral surgery usually takes place right in our dental offices and is handled as an outpatient procedure. This means you can go home the same day without any serious risks or problems.
There are some surgeries which require follow-up visits or surgical procedures. Those surgeries will not be completed in one day. Instead, you will need to return to our office for future appointments.
What Kind of Procedures Do Oral Surgeons Perform?
There are many different kinds of oral surgeries performed by dentists. The kind of procedure that is right for you depends on your condition and what treatment is recommended. Below, we have outlined the most common types of surgeries that are available at Eten Dental’s Bayside office.
Traditional Tooth Extractions
The most common oral surgical procedure is tooth extraction. A tooth extraction is normally fairly routine. Wisdom teeth and decayed teeth can often be removed in our office. In some cases, the surgery is more complicated, such as when a tooth breaks, resulting in roots that must be extracted.
Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift Procedures
Sinus lift procedures and bone grafting are necessary when patients need extra bone in their jaw to support dentures or implants. Dr. Hwang will need access to your jaw bone through surgery, where he will harvest the bone. The bone will be implanted into your jawbone in order to regenerate bone growth.
Dental implants are used to replace teeth. In order to create an implant, a surgeon must implant a post into a person’s jaw. The jaw then heals, fusing to the implant and making the mouth ready for an abutment and crown. Implant surgery is invasive, and may require up to six months of time for the implant and jawbone to fuse and heal.
Surgery is necessary when a person has a broken or cracked jaw, misaligned jaw, or another jaw problem. If you need a jaw surgery, Dr. Hwang will make a small incision in the back of your mouth. This incision allows Dr. Hwang to have access to your jaw. These are often more complicated procedures, which usually require more than one visit to Eten Dental.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Most people will have wisdom teeth removed during their lifetime, which makes it one of the most common surgical procedures. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to erupt through the back of your mouth. Since wisdom teeth are often impacted, causing pressure on your other teeth, dentists recommend that the teeth are extracted. If you need your wisdom teeth removed, Dr. Hwang can perform the procedure himself or refer you to an oral surgeon.
Dr. Hwang can repair minor facial trauma, such as suturing lacerations or cuts, setting fractured jaw or facial bones, and reconnecting severed nerves. More complex surgeries are performed by oral surgeons.
Oral surgeons can also treat facial pain disorders, including disorders caused by TMJ. After imaging studies of the temporomandibular joint, Dr. Hwang can diagnose and perform necessary surgery, or refer you to an oral surgeon for more treatment.
Is Oral Surgery Safe?
Oral surgery is safe when performed by experienced practitioners. However, no surgery is without risk. Oral surgery has side effects that you should be aware of, such as the risk of infection. Infections can be painful and spread to other areas, so it is best to closely follow the dentist’s instructions after surgery.
Pain and swelling are normal results of any surgery. Mild tenderness is normal, but if symptoms worsen, they should always be reported to the dentist.
Blood loss is also a risk after oral surgery. Some blood loss at a surgical site is normal, but it should taper off relatively quickly. You should not lose a lot of blood over the first few days after surgery. If you have excess blood loss, contact your doctor, since this could be a sign of an underlying problem.
Your Comfort Is Important
At Eten Dental, we take your concerns seriously. We will work to ensure your complete comfort during your oral surgery. In addition to various numbing agents, sedation may be available for some procedures. If you are concerned about pain and discomfort, do not hesitate to share your fears with Dr. Hwang. He will be happy to discuss pain management options for your oral surgery.
